Talk given at TEDxGeorgeMasonU, April 6th 2013. Read full bios and event information at www.TEDxGeorgeMasonU.com Dr. Kirk Borne is a Multidisciplinary Data Scientist and an Astrophysicist. He is Professor of Astrophysics and Computational Science in the George Mason University School of Physics, Astronomy, and Computational Sciences (SPACS). He received his B.S. degree in physics from LSU and his Ph.D. in astronomy from Caltech. After 20 years working in NASA, he changed course and became a data scientist in the then new field of 'Data Mining'. His TEDx talk covers some of the basic ideas behind data mining, and how it influences us every day. If you are a Twitter user, you can follow him there as he actively tweets about Big Data, Data Science, and Astronomy under the handle @KirkDBorne....
NJIT School of Management professor Stephan P Kudyba describes what data mining is and how it is being used in the business world.
In today's world we seem more lost despite the abundance of information. Tirthankar Dash, story teller & design thinker for leading businesses around the world gives us a cheat sheet to discover the inner story in each one of us, towards living a more fulfilled life Dash is the founder of Quantum360, a design firm that takes a human-centered, design-based approach to helping organisations innovate and design for a more human future. He is also the co-founder of StoryCompany, a company that serves as a search engine to find meaning at work and in life. StoryCo. is devoted to humanizing workplaces and helping each person explore themselves, their beliefs, behavior patterns and indeed their own story to arrive at their own unique answer to a fundamental question - “What makes my life mean...
Machine Learning and data mining is part SCIENCE (ML algorithms, optimization), part ENGINEERING (large-scale modelling, real-time decisions), part PROCESS (data understanding, feature engineering, modelling, evaluation, and deployment), and part ART. In this talk, Dr. Shailesh Kumar focuses on the "ART of data mining" - the little things that make the big difference in the quality and sophistication of machine learning models we build. Using real-world analytics problems from a variety of domains, Shailesh shares a number of practical learnings in: (1) The art of understanding the data better - (e.g. visualization of text data in a semantic space) (2) The art of feature engineering - (e.g. converting raw inputs into meaningful and discriminative features) (3) The art of dealing with nu...
This is a powerpoint/video compilation I made for a project in my Systems Engineering class. It is a tutorial of Data Mining in the Retail Industry and includes a trip I took to Harris Teeter to prove the importance of Market Basket Analysis in the real world.

R is already a Swiss army knife for data analysis largely due its 6000 libraries but until now it lacked an interface to the Google Analytics API. The release of RGoogleAnalytics library solves this problem. What this means is that digital analysts can now fully use the analytical capabilities of R to fully explore their Google Analytics Data. In this webinar, Andy Granowitz, Developer Advocate (Google Analytics) & Kushan Shah, Contributor & maintainer of RGoogleAnalytics Library will show you how to use R for Google Analytics data mining & generate some great insights. An ex-silicon valley white hat hacker and whistle blower, Karen Rodriguez joins the World Beyond Belief in a discussion about data mining, string theory and alternative realities specifically as it applies to the asymetrical war being waged against innocent civilians. She reveals information that links together various AI technology which may play a major role in both physical gang stalking, harassment, and the use of energy weapons to torture and kill the disobedient population of people with open minds. Subscribe to Motherboard Radio today! http://apple.co/1DWdc9d In October of last year Motherboard gained access to a massive, secretive Bitcoin mine housed within a repurposed factory in the Liaoning Province in rural northeast China. This is the infrastructure that keeps the digital currency’s decentralized network up and running, and its operators are profiting big time. The mine we visited is just one of six sites owned by a secretive group of four people, part of a colossal mining operation that, as of our visit, cumulatively generated 4,050 bitcoins a month, equivalent to a monthly gross of $1.5 million.
